Speak up about HIV to friends and family. In an atmosphere of dignity and respect, we all win.
Speak Out
 SPEAK UP SPEAK OUT
HIV/AIDS stigma is expressed around the world in a variety of ways, including:
  • Rejection and avoidance of PHAs.
  • Housing or employment discrimination against PHAs.
  • Mandatory HIV testing without prior consent or protection of confidentiality.
  • Violence against persons who are perceived to have HIV/AIDS.
Our beliefs and values can also add to HIV stigma. Often when someone learns of a person's HIV status the question is how did he or she get it? There is an assumption that the person is loose or immoral.

The affect of HIV stigma

Out of fear of people finding out about their HIV status, some PHAs do not share their HIV status with loved ones or access treatment and other services, leading to isolation, depression and a greater chance for getting ill. Stigma and fear also stop many people from being tested for HIV.

But knowledge leads to understanding. And, we are empowered to make informed choices to reduce our HIV risk and support people living with HIV in our communities.

Simple ways you can make a difference:
  • Learn more about HIV, risks and living with HIV within our community.
  • Talk about HIV with friends and family.
  • When you hear misinformation about HIV, speak up.
  • When you hear gossip, speak out.
  • Volunteer with community AIDS service organizations in your area to help spread the word.
